I love this album. Easily my favorite release of 2012 thus far. It may even be my favorite Esperanza Spalding album ever released. That’s saying something because I love her album Esperanza with a passion. It’s kind of embarrassing how excited I was that this song was on the album… but I’ve been in love with her version of this song ever since I saw footage of her performing it live. Delivering superb vocals while masterfully playing that bass like no one else can. (Michael would be proud.) I feel Esperanza has already transcended the genre of jazz on previous albums taking the genre to new plateaus. However, this album truly shows how broad her appeal can be. This is soul and jazz wrapped into one. I believe the album successfully appeals to your average top 40 station listener, without compromising its integrity. Esperanza means “hope”, and that’s exactly what she brings to music as a whole.
You don’t always have to be sweet and lovey dovey all the time. You can be the assholes to each other and be mean. That’s when you know there is comfortability. Making fun of each other, calling mean names, abusing each other. Abusing as in joking around. The playful fighting. That’s another way to show love.
